According to an exclusive report by Sky Sport Italia, the head of the Italian delegation, Gianluigi Buffon, is set to resign from his position after the national team's defeat in the 2026 World Cup play-off final to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The 48-year-old, who has been in this role since August 2023, is expected to depart along with coach Gennaro Gattuso after Italy's failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.
Fabrizio Romano has already reported the likely departure of the national coach, despite the president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, initially asking both of them to remain in their positions.
Buffon initially confirmed that both he and Gattuso would remain at the Federation's disposal at least until the end of the sports season in June, but developments are rapid, and their departure from the "Azzurri" may be announced much sooner than expected.
We remind you that the decision comes after the 1-1 draw in Zenica against Bosnia which ended with a 4-1 defeat on penalties, marking a new historic low for the four-time world champions who have not appeared in a World Cup since 2014.
