What did you have... Italy, what have I always had! For the third consecutive World Cup the Azzurri are out of the tournament, as after the 1-1 in 120 minutes in Zenica, they lost 4-1 on penalties to the incredible Bosnia and will watch this year's World Cup from the couch... The Bosnians are returning to the tournament after 2014 and will face Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in the group stage.
Good from the first minutes was the pace, with both teams looking for a quick goal and Italy finding it in the 15th minute, when after a mistake by Vasil, Barella set up Ken and he opened the scoring with an excellent shot.
The hosts pushed up their lines and forced Donnarumma into saves with attempts from Basić (20') and Katić (24'), with Demirović having a header go wide in the 38th minute.
Three minutes later, the Bosnians secured a numerical advantage, with Bastoni being sent off for a foul on Memić and the match gaining new interest!
Playing with one more player, Bosnia pressed hard and in the 51st minute saw Donnarumma stop Alajbegović.
In the 60th minute, Ken went one-on-one but missed a huge opportunity to double his team's goals, while in the 72nd minute the Italian goalkeeper made another stop against Alajbegović.
Espósito (74') and Dimarco (77') had good chances for 2-0 but in the 79th minute came the 1-1 for Bosnia, with Džeko heading the ball, the Azzurri's goalkeeper saving it, and Tabaković pushing the ball into the net from close range! Donnarumma stopped Demirović in the 87th minute, with the match ultimately going to extra time.
Italy came close to scoring in the stoppage time of the first half of extra time with a header from Espósito that was saved by Vasil, while in the 113th minute the Italian goalkeeper stopped Alajbegović.
The shot from Taḥirović six minutes later was slightly off target, with the qualification being decided on penalties.
There, the hosts were flawless, with Espósito (wide) and Cristante (crossbar) being the unfortunate ones and the Italian dream of returning to the World Cup fading away...
